Xanax for OCD

Xanax or Alprazolam is prescribed to deal with cases of panic disorders and anxiety in patients of different age. The main chemicals of the remedy affect the brain and one’s central nervous system in a way to ensure a calming effect and relaxation. The FDA has approved Xanax for OCD treatment, too. However, it should always be used with caution.

How Does Xanax Affect the Body?

Being a benzodiazepine class drug, Xanax enhances the effects of the neurotransmitter GABA at the GABA receptor. It ensures sedative and sleep-inducing, anticonvulsant and anxiolytic properties and is regarded as a powerful muscle relaxant.

Even very low doses of this medication shouldn’t be included into long-term treatment processes as the medication may cause dependence that is hard to overcome. All the above-mentioned properties and characteristics make Xanax an exceptional option in treating muscle spasm and seizures, insomnia and anxiety, agitation and symptoms of alcohol withdrawal.

In most cases Xanax is regarded as a safe medication for a short-term use. However, there are some cognitive impairment effects as well as paradoxical ones noticed in few patients (behavioral disinhibition and aggression). Its long-term use is never allowed as it adds to the decrease of dose’s effects and may harm both patients’ mental and physical health.

Xanax for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Though OCD is a single condition, it can be presented in different ways. In most cases it doesn’t really matter much which way the obsessive compulsive disorder is developed: they all work the same and have identical symptoms. Today doctors and scientists offer different treatment options to pick from, yet Xanax OCD therapies are considered to be the most successful.

Xanax or Alprazolam is very sedating. It helps OCD by affecting the ability to relax and sleep in the evening and at night. There are less potent benzodiazepines, yet Xanax is prescribed more often than others thanks to its potency and reliability.

Slight tolerance develops within a week or two. During this period a patient doesn’t notice any anxiety. The pills are taken up to 3 times a day as long as the maximum half-life of the drug is 11-12 hours. Some patients experience residual effects in the morning, if the pill was taken late at night.

What Is Xanax OCD Dosage Prescribed?

When it comes to OCD Xanax treatment, the starting dose is equal to 0.25-0.5 mg. The dose is taken three times daily. It is usually increased, if effects are positive, but minor. The increase is possible every 3-4 days, if no adverse reactions are noticed. A maximum total in case of OCD is 4 mg daily.

Don’t take the medication, if you administer any other drugs on a regular basis. A combination of other potent meds with Xanax leads to severe side effects and even a fatal outcome. Don’t drink alcohol while taking Xanax, if you don’t want to seek immediate medical help right afterwards.

If you are pregnant or planning to be, breastfeeding or taking birth control pill, have a professional consultation before administering Xanax for OCD: the chemical lessens effects of birth control pills, passes into breast milk and can cause complications in babies.

Side Effects and Paradoxical Reactions after Xanax Administration

Generally speaking, the profile of side effects triggered by Xanax for OCD anxiety is benign, but some patients report severe reactions, when higher doses are administered. Almost all side effects vanish in the course of a regular therapy. Yet symptoms of an allergic reaction may remain (swelling of the face or tongue, lips or throat, hives, difficulty breathing).

Medical attention should be sought, if a patient has the signs of yellowing of eyes or skin. As to additional side effects to be expected, their list includes:

  • Disinhibition;
  • Respiratory depression;
  • Dizziness;
  • Fatigue;
  • Slurred speech;
  • Rare suicidal thoughts;
  • Constipation;
  • Drowsiness;
  • Lightheadedness;
  • Libido changes;
  • Appetite increase/decrease;
  • Concentration problems;
  • Hallucinations;
  • Memory loss (short-term).

There are also so-called paradoxical side effects that occur really rarely. The use of medication should be gradually discontinued, if the drug causes:

  • Agitation and mania;
  • Restlessness and hyperactivity;
  • Aggression an rage;
  • Hostility;
  • Tremor;
  • Muscle twitching.

And though they are rare, it doesn’t mean that you can’t have one of them after a single dose administered.

Xanax and OCD appeared to go hand in hand. The obsessive compulsive disorder has never been treated as a condition that is less serious than anxiety, phobias or panic attacks. So, its treatment should be regarded as a very serious process. Xanax prescription drug shows the way to life free from the obsessive compulsive disorder and complications that it always brings with.
