Alprazolam vs ClonazepamA variety of medications can be prescribed for depression as well as anxiety disorder treatment in people of different age. Alprazolam and Clonazepam were added to the list. Administering these medications separately brings expected effects and improvements. But what if they were combined? It is essential to be aware of how Alprazolam or Clonazepam works. What body parts do they affect the most? And what complications can be expected after their consumption?

Clonazepam vs. Xanax: How Do They Work?

Alprazolam and Clonazepam are the active ingredients. They are two medications under the names Xanax and Klonopin respectively. These two remedies are regarded as CNS depressants (depressants of the central nervous system) that belong to the class of benzodiazepines. The substances affect the GABA thus triggering the slowing down of all nerve impulses in the body. What are the expected effects? They are calmness and sedation.

Who gets these medications prescribed? They are normally recommended to those patients, who suffer from panic attacks, phobias, deep depression or anxiety disorders. However, there is still difference between Alprazolam and Clonazepam:

  • Clonazepam can also be offered to patients with seizure disorders (spasticity or seizures as well as tremors), Tourette syndrome, epilepsy or even multiple sclerosis cases;
  • Alprazolam works for depression, panic attacks and anxiety disorders; it is ineffective for cases of MS or epilepsy. Besides, it normally provides effects for several hours, while Clonazepam has comparatively longer action duration.

More on Primary Differences

When Clonazepam compared to Alprazolam, a specialist always sees the difference. And one of the main is the way the body processes both medications. They use the term ‘half-life’, which stands for how long it takes for half of the active ingredient to be removed from patient’s bloodstream.

When it comes to Klonopin, its half-life is much longer than that of Xanax. That is why the action onset is longer and so is the duration. However, this effect can bring either advantages or drawbacks, depending on symptoms of a patient.

Xanax is characterized by a much faster action onset addressing depression, anxiety or panic attack immediately. This is the main feature it is valued for. BUT such great effects last for 3 hours maximum. So, is Clonazepam like Alprazolam? No! Clonazepam brings effects, if it is used on a regular daily basis, while Alprazolam is taken when needed.

Much depends on the condition and needs of a patient. It is hard to say which medication is better: one drug is usually more appropriate than the other one. If you know and understand the effectiveness and action method of the medication, choosing the one you need is easier.

Xanax vs. Klonopin: Dosage Difference

Klonopin medication comes in regular tablets and disintegrating tablets. The first ones are allowed to be consumed up to three times daily. They are available in strengths of 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1 mg and 2 mg. As to the disintegrating tablets, they are offered in strengths of 0.125 mg, 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1 mg and 2 mg.

As to Xanax, you can buy regular tablets, extended release tablets and oral solutions. Regular tablets come in strengths of 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1 mg and 2 mg. Extended release ones are sold as 0.5 mg, 1 mg, 2 mg and 3 mg pills. And an oral solution is available as 1 mg/mL. Most of these forms should be administered more than once a day. The only exception is an extended release version that is taken once daily.

What Are the Side Effects?

Taking Alprazolam with Clonazepam is not lethal. Yet both medications are potent and may cause severe side effects, when taken separately. Not speaking of the negative reactions that occur, if they are combined.

Xanax may cause a person experience:

  1. Seizures;
  2. Dizziness and drowsiness;
  3. Fatigue;
  4. Muscle pain;
  5. Suicidal thoughts and depression;
  6. Lightheadedness;
  7. Nausea and/or vomiting;
  8. Swelling of body parts;
  9. Vision problems.

When you administer more Alprazolam than prescribed, you put your health at risk. Cases of Xanax overdose are frequent. They can cause brain damage, seizures, coma and even death.

What about Klonopin? The side effects it provokes are similar to those triggered by Xanax as long as these meds are of the same drug class:

  • Headaches and/or migraines;
  • Seizures;
  • Confusion and hallucinations;
  • Vision problems;
  • Heart rate issues;
  • Tiredness and confusion;
  • Difficulty speaking.

Cases of overdose are characterized by a very extreme confusion, fainting as well as inability to move muscles. Can you take Alprazolam with Clonazepam? The joined consumption is never recommended by healthcare providers. Why so? The matter is that the combined effects normally lead to the onset of mixed side effects. They become more severe and lead to more serious health complications. When taken separately, the medications provide many positives. Yet, when combined, the drugs cause addiction, withdrawal from which is one of the toughest.

While asking yourself can you mix Alprazolam and Clonazepam, keep in mind: both medications affect the brain neurons directly. Thus they affect the chemicals of the brain. Both medications are taken together in very rare cases: Klonopin – for a daily administration, Xanax – for very severe cases of panic attacks and anxiety disorders (as-needed). Mixing Clonazepam and Alprazolam without professional prescription may lead to hospitalization and coma.

Alprazolam vs. Klonopin: Which Is Better?

The cons and pros of both medications should be discussed with a healthcare provider. Depending on the severity of the condition, symptoms and your medical history, a doctor will be able to choose the right treatment option.

Xanax fails, when it comes to treating spasticity, seizures and tremors. Klonopin doesn’t provide immediate effects for panic attacks and anxiety disorders. So, which one is best for you depends on the type of the condition that you suffer from.
